The Curious Case of the Blind Man and Lady Luck

If it’s 4.30am on a Sunday morning and you are asked, “Where is Taiwo?” The answer is constant: “She is standing near a junction.” Nine times out of ten, you will be right. For somewhere in the darkness of Oloworo, as sure as rain, there will be a Taiwo standing at a junction and it would be me.

My need to catch my church’s first service for 6am had led me there. It had me awake by 3.45am and at the junction by 4.45am. The least I deserved for my dedication was to be in church for 6am. And for a time, I always made it.

All that changed when he happened.

The district changed its bus and driver. The bus turned out to be the snail of the vehicle kingdom on the outside with headlamps as bright as two candles in the wind. Its insides held the type of comfortable confines that only a sardine would find comfort in. Only 1 seat in that bus wouldn’t bruise your knees and the driver was sitting on it.

The snail itself was driven by a night-blind old man. From then on, we were grateful to get to church for 6.40. But out of pity, we kept this old night-blind man and his snail bus. Till one day, ten minutes into the journey, we were almost mowed down by not one, but two trailers in immediate succession at the same intersection.

Huge trailers we all saw, except for him. As our screams and collective lives flashed before our eyes in double successions, we all knew he had to go; it was either him or us.

Transportation is a very profitable business. But, there really is no such thing as too much profit as such, businesses make all sorts of compromises to increase their profit margin: Hiring inadequately trained drivers (like we did), using poor quality vehicles (like we did). The result of these decisions could be fatal accidents, dispossession of goods within the trucks or theft of said trucks.

Every one of these is detrimental to the involved company. It damages their reputation both with investors and the public. In serious cases, The company could get sued. All of these could be avoided by making the right partnerships.

At Dreg Waters, we don’t depend on luck for delivery of quality services; we make the right moves to ensure a perfect result every time. As for my church pilgrimage, we have a new driver and bus. He can see clearly and has the brightest head lamps. We get to church by 6am with our knees fully intact.
